“There are people who live under the earth apart from humans. They have strong spiritual connections with Satan. These special people sometimes intermarry with humans and live with them. Whenever they tire of living with humans, their spirits will depart their bodies and go to the underworld and start building a house. If a man comes home one day and complains of a headache, it might mean his spirit has already left him.

“When his spirit has finished building the house in the underworld, it will come back to him and tell his wife’s spirit to go and plaster it. When her spirit leaves, she will start complaining of a headache, too. When her spirit has finished plastering the underworld house, it will come back to her. Then her husband’s spirit will go again to the underworld, and he will die. When his spirit has finished getting everything together in the underworld, the wife’s headache will come back and she will die, too, as her spirit goes to live with her husband’s spirit.

“Before the husband dies, he will tell his friends and neighbors that he won’t be with them this year when they plant the fields. By this the neighbors will know when he dies that he went to
the underworld.

“Children of those who depart for the underworld must pay attention. There are areas where entrances to the underworld can be found. When the child of departed parents walks by these places, he might hear his parents calling his name, but he should keep walking and take no notice. If he heeds their call, he will die and join them in the underworld.

“Only clairvoyants can tell if a person is entirely human or mixed with the underworld race. To everyone else, they appear human. Pure underworld people keep to themselves and are usually found around rivers. Their skin is often white and they are very hairy and don’t wear clothes. If you see one, you should run and hide. If they find you outside at night, they will eat you.

“Some clairvoyants can see into the underworld and watch people’s dead relatives living the good life down there. Often, clairvoyants choose to die so they can go to the underworld and marry the beautiful people there.”

Does this sound like a fairytale? It is actually a real belief in Otammari culture, and I encounter it almost daily. Satan has blinded people’s eyes and created very strong illusions to chain people to him. This belief in the immortal soul and life after death is a major foundation stone in the Otammari worldview, and it makes people strongly resistant to the gospel. Every aspect is linked together, and each idea has to be dealt with systematically. If there is no immortal soul, then there are no ancestor spirits. If there are no ancestor spirits and no fetishes, there is no reason to do the ceremonies and sacrifices, no one to intercede for them, no ancestors to put curses on them, no ancestors to help them control other people, etc.

This whole thing is a big reminder to us about the power of Satan to build delusions that will draw away the very elect of God if they are not watchful and founded in the word of God.
