Stepping Out in Faith

The Commission

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” —Matthew 28:19-20

Jesus has given all of us the command to go and share the gospel with the world. After 2,000 years, however, one third of the 7+ billion people on Earth still have no way of hearing the good news of Jesus Christ unless someone goes to tell them.

Is God calling YOU to be a missionary to the unreached?

Does it really matter for me personally?

“The Great Commission is not an option to be considered; it is a command to be obeyed.” —J. Hudson Taylor.

“Lost people matter to God, so they must matter to us.” —Keith Wright

I’m not sure if I’m called.

The command is clear: “Go into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” —Mark 16:15.

“Every true disciple is born into the kingdom of God as a missionary.” —Desire of Ages, p. 195.

How many times have you heard the gospel? “No one has the right to hear the gospel twice, while there remains someone who has not heard it once.” —Oswald J. Smith

I don’t have many talents. I don’t feel qualified.

“That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” —2 Corinthians 12:10.

“God uses men who are weak and feeble enough to lean on Him.” —Hudson Taylor.

AFM can help you, equip you, and train you through our missionary training program. You can serve. You only need to be willing. “It is possible for the most obscure person in a church, with a heart right toward God, to exercise as much power for the evangelization of the world, as it is for those who stand in the most prominent positions.” —John R. Mott.

I don’t have any missions or overseas experience. I’m not ready to start a career in missionary work.

Are you single or married without dependents? Why not come and be a short-term missionary for one year to get a taste of missions experience? That way, you can see if God is calling you to serve in missions long-term while working with experienced career missionaries who you can learn from and talk to about longer service.

Still working on your education? Take a break and come be a student missionary for one year to see if this is what you should do once your education is complete!

I’m in an important position in my career!

Why not use your skills for eternal, rather than temporal, good? “If God calls you to be a missionary, don’t stoop to be a king.” —Jordan Grooms. Or an accountant, banker, mechanic, scientist, manager, surgeon, designer, farmer, engineer, professor, or [fill in your profession].

I don’t have the money. I have a family to take care of.

AFM will assist you in building a support team that will help provide your financial needs as well as lift you up in prayer. God will supply all your needs, both now in your home country and wherever you will go to serve Him (Philippians 4:19).

I’m worried about danger.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” —Isaiah 41:10

There are other things stopping me from going.

“If we are going to wait until every possible hindrance has been removed before we do a work for the Lord, we will never attempt to do anything.” —T. J. Bach

“We have all eternity to tell of victories won for Christ, but we have only a few hours before sunset to win them.” —Jonathan Goforth

But I can be a missionary in my own hometown.

This is true, and you should be a missionary of Christ everywhere you go. However, consider this: people in America and other developed and free countries can learn about the gospel through radio, TV, Internet, neighbors, hotel rooms, their own Bibles, walking up to a church, or asking someone. The unreached have NO way of knowing Jesus…unless someone goes to tell them. Why not you?

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” —Edmund Burke.

“No reserve. No retreat. No regret.” —William Borden.
