I have wanted to be a missionary my whole life, and while I was never drawn to a specific people group, I was always open to serving wherever the Lord guided me. This openness became a challenge when it came time to choose where to serve. Kwan and I decided to leave the decision in God’s hands. While filling out our application form, we had to select three projects. We prayerfully chose Mozambique in West Africa and Thailand in Southeast Asia. However, when it came to our third choice, we were stumped. Then Kwan suggested Japan. I initially thought it was a ridiculous idea, believing there was no way we would end up there.
After submitting our application, Kwan focused his research on Japan. Meanwhile, I delved into research on Mozambique and Thailand and quickly discovered that God was not calling us to either country. One evening, Kwan invited me to watch a documentary about a Japanese man who cleans out the apartments of kodokushi, a Japanese term for those who pass away alone and unnoticed. The man shared that he cleans at least three of these apartments each week. This revelation deeply moved us, not just because of the loss of life but because many in Japan are passing away without ever encountering the love of Jesus. It was at this moment that Kwan and I felt a clear calling to serve in Japan.
As we prepare to embark on our missionary journey to a nation grappling with significant societal challenges, the most pressing being that most of the population does not know Jesus, we humbly invite you to join our support team and pray for the Japanese people.
