Picture a beach ball balanced on the peak of Mount Everest. Light breezes nudge it first one direction, then another. Which whisper of wind will the ball listen to? It might seem like an insignificant decision—whether to roll left or right. But that little choice will determine whether that ball ends up many miles south in Nepal, or deep into China on the North.
This is how it is with missionaries. It just takes one little “Yes.” One decision to serve, whether for a decade or a few months, will transform your life and the lives of your children forever.
I was reminded of this as I read the stories of our two new missionary families, the Hickses and the Bashas, debuting on page 6 and 7. Both of these families trace their mission calling back to “yes” decisions made many years ago.
David Hicks said, “Yes,” to the Holy Spirit’s nudge in 1994 when he went as a student missionary to Papua New Guinea, and one year of service turned into two. Little did he know that first “yes” would lead him and his wife Edie back to PNG 19 years later!
Viktor and Sara Basha’s futures collided when they were quite young, and they and their parents said, “Yes,” to mission calls that brought them together as teammates in reaching the same people group. How could they and their parents have known that God would knit their lives together in love and draw them into a new ground-breaking ministry in a neighboring country with a similar language and culture?
What breezes are nudging you today? Is the Holy Spirit breathing on your life? “Yes” is a powerful word. Say it, and watch what happens.
