The Equal Talent

“Mommy, what is time?” This question from our three-year-old daughter had us scratching our heads. How do we define time without using a circular definition? Although much time has passed since Benya asked us what it means (she’s now almost 30), the significance of time increases as we approach its end.

“When the fulness of the time had come . . .” Jesus was born. However, when the disciples asked Jesus when he would set up his kingdom, Jesus answered, “It is not for you to know the time . . .” of the second coming. He was telling them, “Your job is to be My witnesses.”

Time is a talent—the only talent I know where everyone has an equal portion—the 24 hours of each day. The abilities to do math, navigate directions, carry a tune and learn foreign languages have not been distributed equally. My husband has difficulty with directions, and I struggle to learn languages. But time is something of which we all have the same amount.

I have discovered that God’s timing is best. In 2019, when we first accepted the call to come back to Thailand as missionaries, we needed more time to be ready. But when we launched in May of 2022, we were prepared. God had given us some time to take care of essential matters.

Several recent experiences reminded me to thank God for His timing. One day, I felt impressed not to wait to book train tickets to attend a friend’s upcoming wedding in Bangkok. I was able to get a comfortable lower berth. A friend waited a few hours and was forced to get an upper berth. Another instance was when I took our vehicle in for a regular oil change. It had a hard time starting, and the battery died when I got to the dealership. I was able to get it replaced without any problems.

When I take time to read the Bible and pray, God helps me to do more things in less time. He leads me to meet people whom I can bless for His kingdom. I love hearing stories about how God’s timing was perfect in people’s lives. Heaven will be wonderful to listen to all of the stories.

Father God, please lead my life according to your timing and help me to trust in your leading.
