God is Always in Control

How can we lead Muslims to Jesus? There are some theories, studies and even beautiful testimonies that help answer this question. I have read and heard a lot about preaching the gospel among Muslims, and God has placed a great concern in my heart in this regard. But the fact is, it is not simple. It is not a technical issue that you can solve with a good evangelism manual. This is a complicated question to solve, so achieving success in preaching to Muslims is, in fact, a supernatural task above all. This has been clear to me for some time now, and since then I have been asking God to show me how to reach the hearts of our brothers who profess the Islamic faith.

Recently, God gave me an answer, a direction. I met a young Senegalese man named Mustafá here in Guinea-Bissau. He comes from a Muslim family and came to know Jesus virtually by himself. After his mother passed away, he entered into a conflict of faith and concluded that his family’s faith offered neither comfort nor answers to the complex dilemmas of our existence, such as death.

Mustafá began to study the Bible out of curiosity. His first contact with Christianity was through Jehovah’s Witnesses. It was not long before his father discovered that he had a deep desire to become a Christian, so he threw him out of the house. Mustafá began a difficult journey, jumping from city to city, house to house, often deprived of food, even sleeping on the street, but he didn’t give up. After some time, he discovered the biblical Sabbath, and it became clear to him that keeping the Sabbath was important.

After doing some research, Mustafá discovered that the Adventist Church kept the Sabbath. With much effort, he managed to get the phone number of an Adventist pastor, but the church was over 100 kilometers (62 miles) away. When he called the pastor, he said, “I understand that God has a remnant who keep the commandments and have faith in Jesus. Now I want to be baptized.” After a long wait, he managed to get to the church and was baptized in Senegal.

After some time, Mustafá determined that he should look for another place to live, and decided to go to Guinea-Bissau, where there are more Adventist churches, and he could be better used and welcomed by the church. In early March, he arrived in Bissau, and we met. We talked a lot about how to reach Muslims, how to touch their hearts and build strong relationships. Mustafá is now working on our project as a French teacher, helping us to reach out more to the Muslim students who attend our school. It has been an incredible experience.

I have learned a lot from Mustafá and I am very grateful to God for bringing him to our project at just the right time. His arrival showed me that God is at work in many places, reaching people and raising up missionaries. I am convinced that people like Mustafá are sincerely seeking the Lord here in Guinea-Bissau, and the Holy Spirit will connect us to them. There is no need to be anxious. God is in control.

May God help us to find and welcome these people, and may we be an instrument used by the Holy Spirit to touch the hearts of the unreached.

“And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd” (John 10:16).
