Running Buddy

The narrow dusty road was quiet, save for the quick rhythm of our footsteps. The Dragon River stretched out to our left as the sun’s early morning rays danced lightly off its steadily flowing waters. Passing quiet homes, closed-up shops, and vacant overgrown lots, we ran toward the city park.

As we slowed to a walk, I turned to Robin.

“What did you think of the story we read last week?”

“Honestly? It was a bit surprising.”

“Yeah? What part?”

“I guess . . . just the fact that Jesus washed their feet. I mean, He’s their teacher, their leader. And yet He kneels like a servant. It makes me wonder if I would be willing to do that.”

I nodded, our conversation fading as we picked up the pace and started running again.

Robin had been a regular at our Friday night group long before I arrived. He had actually met group members because of a mutual interest in exercise and a desire to improve his English. After I arrived, Robin and I quickly began running together. But as we became better friends, we seemed to run less and instead talk more. Robin opened his social network to our group, connecting us with new people and allowing a strong core group of friends to form. In a way, Robin had become my person of peace. Even in our early morning runs and candid conversations, Christ was slowly revealing Himself to Robin.

As I prepare to relaunch to Southeast Asia, I am excited to see how God will work to bring people into my life, especially a person of peace who will open their social network to the life-changing message of the gospel. Will you prayerfully consider joining as a monthly donor as AFM seeks to establish a disciple-making movement amongst the Tai-Kadai?
