Hosting Angels Without Knowing It

Since discovering that we would go to Georgia as career missionaries, we began studying about this interesting country. Georgian culture is characterized by its vibrant traditions, delicious cuisine, and a strong sense of national identity. Our research has amazed us so much that we are excited to go as soon as possible. We thank God that one of the families working in the AFM office is Georgian. Because of them, we have experienced one of the most distinctive aspects of Georgian culture: hospitality. Georgians take pride in their tradition of welcoming guests with warmth and generosity, often treating them to elaborate feasts.

It reminds us of a verse in the Bible that says, “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it” (Hebrews 13:2). It seems that Georgians never forgot this passage and through their hospitality, even the ones that do not know Him, show Christ’s love.

As Brazilians, we are also very warm, welcoming people. We expect this cultural similarity will help us develop real friendships and, through this, open doors to share the good news.

Also, some New Testament stories come to our minds about Jesus going about and always having meals with friends and strangers. Georgians like to be with people, especially around the table. We love that, too. Gathering like this will be a great opportunity to practice Christ’s methods of discipling others to become disciple-makers.

Please pray for us as we face the challenges of language learning and cultural studies. By developing these, we will better glorify God in the field.
We welcome you to join us in this exciting work of reaching the unreached of Georgia. May God bless you!
