Did you know that the Japanese people of Japan are the second largest unreached people group in the world? When I learned that, I could not help but ask: Why? Japan is open to the world, with religious freedom and access to the gospel. Their cities are full of life, technology and opportunity—people there enjoy so many things we would call blessings. But even with all they have, Christianity still has not taken root. Less than one percent of Japanese people are Christians, and most have never even heard a clear presentation of the gospel. That is hard for me to wrap my head around.

A significant barrier appears to be materialism. The idol of materialism is deeply rooted in Japanese society, often intertwined with cultural values of achievement, status and personal fulfillment. Many buy whatever their hearts desire, even if it means going into debt. The pursuit of possessions and comfort is evident everywhere, from the latest electronics to fashionable clothing. This drive for material success offers a false sense of security and identity, leaving many feeling empty and searching for deeper meaning.

The battle against materialism is not unique to Japan; it is a universal challenge that distracts us from seeking lasting purpose. Combating materialism is ultimately a matter of the heart. True victory comes from a willingness to surrender everything to follow Jesus, who offers a treasure far greater than anything this world can provide.

Our prayer is to share the gospel with the Japanese, helping them see that when they let go of everything to follow Jesus, they receive an even greater reward: the ultimate treasure, Jesus Christ himself.
