Recently, I found myself away from home, away from my tool box, with a task to do that required simple tools—a screwdriver and a pair of pliers. Not knowing that I was going to need these tools, I had not planned ahead. My son came to the rescue with his multi-tool pocket knife. He had planned for the possible need. With just a few simple twists and squeezes, I was able to complete the task, thankful for my son’s forethought.

My experience reminded me of a story in Genesis where planning mattered. Like Joseph of old who made provision for the years of famine, we should make plans and take action so the people of God will be sustained and the Gospel will be preached in all the world.

Much like a multi-tool pocket knife, a personal will can do several things: allow the choice of a guardian for your children, take care of your family and leave a legacy sustaining God’s work, all the while providing you access to your assets and income during your lifetime. Without a will or similar instrument in place, your wishes might not be accomplished. Take the time to put them in writing. A will only benefits you and others when it’s written.
