“Education can open doors and lead to a better life. Education can create opportunities for you to do what you love and to be happy. We want to see you grow and do things in life that you’re passionate about to make your dreams a reality,” I told Tong, a 12-year-old student of mine, as I talked with him about his future and what he would like to study at university.
We first met Tong when he began attending our children’s church program in the village nearly eight years ago. He is also active in a weekly family Bible study group and regularly comes to our learning center after school for tutoring. Tong is a dedicated learner and especially enjoys studying English. We sometimes practice English together by reading stories from an English children’s Bible.
“Tong, you are smart, and you have so much potential,” I added. “What do you dream of becoming in the future? Would you be happy simply staying in the village?”
“I am not sure yet. I am still trying to figure out what path to take,” Tong answered. “If I get the chance, I would like to go to university. I want more from life than what I have now.”
I want to inspire Tong to pursue his education just like my parents inspired me when I was a child. They frequently said, “We have no wealth to give except the opportunity for you to get an education. Make sure to study English. If you do, you will have more opportunities in life.” I am grateful for their wisdom.
Over the years of teaching in the villages around our area, we have become acquainted with many families. Some support their children’s education and want something better for their future. They bring their children to us to learn English and study the Bible. Other families believe that higher education is not really necessary. They have a farm, and life will always be just like it is now. They do not see the potential in their children that we can see.
Please pray for our team as we continue to minister to these families. We especially want to invest in our students’ educational pursuits so that they will grow into strong Christian leaders who will return and serve their communities.
