Sister Nércia was abandoned by her mother when she was just one year old. Her grandparents, whom she called her parents, raised her—a sad reality, yet very common in Mozambique. She did not know her true identity until she was 12, when she discovered who her biological parents were—a striking and painful moment.
From childhood, constant illness and intense spiritual oppression marked her life. In her southern Mozambique community, there are frequent reports of experiences during sleep in which a person feels as if they are being visited or dominated by a spiritual entity. Deep fear, physical sensations and ongoing disturbances accompany these experiences. Sister Nércia lived through exactly this kind of suffering.
One incident left a strong impression on her family: Sister Nércia fainted, and a large serpent remained beside her body for hours, deepening their desperation and search for solutions.
The family sought help at hospitals and through traditional practices and spiritual rituals. No matter how much money they spent, nothing brought lasting freedom. Even as a married adult, Sister Nércia remained trapped in this cycle of pain.
Then something began to change.
Her husband met a brother from the church in Nhamaxaxa—a church that, by God’s grace, was planted as part of missionary work and has become a true center for making disciples. This brother shared the Word of God with him and showed that true freedom does not come from rituals, but from Christ.
Despite fears and negative influences, Sister Nércia decided to go to church. There, she found something different: Bible study, prayer and a community committed to the truth. Over time, she began to study regularly.
Then came the transformation.
The experiences that tormented her at night ceased. The fear disappeared. The constant illnesses gave way to peace. What years of human effort could not resolve was transformed by the power of God.
Sister Nércia gave her life to Christ and was baptized along with her husband. Today, she is living proof that the gospel not only reaches people—it completely transforms them.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.
The old has passed away; behold, the new has come”
(2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV).
