Kangaba, meaning miracle, is a stronghold of fetishism in the Mande Empire and where God led us to build our radio station. In anthropology, fetishism is the veneration of objects believed to hold supernatural powers or spiritual significance. Although often misunderstood or misrepresented, fetish practices remain an essential part of many traditional societies, shaping their spiritual and social frameworks.
In Kangaba, fetishism is more than a religious practice; it is woven into the community’s identity and daily existence. At the same time, Adventist beliefs focus on faith in Jesus Christ and the guidance of the Bible rather than the power of objects. For Adventists, spiritual strength and hope are found in a personal relationship with God. This contrast highlights both the importance of local traditions and the heart of our mission: to share the distinct hope and message of Christianity, gently inviting others to discover a new way to experience faith.
Kangaba is home to numerous clans, each with distinct sacred fetish objects. These artifacts—stones, wood carvings or animal bones—are regarded as repositories of spirits that protect clans and promote prosperity. Rituals are conducted every seven years, with people from across West Africa coming to observe this special ceremony, appease the spirits and seek blessings.
The villagers’ relationship with their fetishes is both personal and collective, which is why they are difficult to penetrate. Individuals may keep small objects at home for protection or luck, while larger fetishes are placed in public shrines and receive collective attention during festivals and ceremonies. These occasions feature drumming, dancing and chanting, creating an atmosphere of reverence and unity.
Belief in the power of fetishes shapes many aspects of life, from healing practices to marriage, conflict resolution, naming ceremonies and agricultural cycles. The fetish priest and elders pass down stories and rituals to younger generations, ensuring the continuity of their way of life. While outsiders may view these practices with skepticism, for the villagers, fetishism is a source of strength and identity, bonding the community. It is what holds them together, a reminder that ancient beliefs still hold meaning in the modern world.
The practice of fetishism in Kangaba illustrates the enduring power of spiritual traditions to shape collective values and social bonds. By honoring and nurturing their fetishes, the villagers preserve their traditions and maintain a vital link to their ancestors and heritage.
Yet amid this stronghold of fetishism, Mali’s first Adventist Radio station was inaugurated. The construction of this radio station was marked by hostility and spiritual battles. Acquiring and filing legal documents for the radio station were met with regular protests from the government and local entities. We sometimes faced physical attacks, insults and death threats, but we refused to give in. We pressed forward, fueled by the belief that perseverance and endurance would carry us farther than strength alone.
The radio station has reached more than 300,000 regular listeners in Kangaba and surrounding villages. Community members have started attending prayer groups and seeking counsel from our team. Even some former opponents have shared testimonies about how the broadcasts have changed their perspective. Local families have reported renewed hope and unity, and we have witnessed collaborative efforts between Adventist members and villagers to support families in need. These outcomes show that our mission is truly making a tangible difference.
Today, the Adventist radio station offers listeners a unique source of inspiration and comfort, delivering uplifting messages and spiritual guidance throughout the day, including music, sermons, health messages, family life and prayer broadcasts, and dramatized Bible stories developed a decade ago by former missionaries serving on the Malinke Project. The station is regarded as offering a fresh platform for news, entertainment and local culture. The broadcasts help deepen faith, strengthen values and remind individuals of the blessings in their lives. Many people find solace in tuning in, knowing they are part of a larger fellowship dedicated to supporting one another and sharing the joys of their faith journey, even commenting that the radio station has brought light to the district and has given them a sense of pride. One listener shared, “When I listen to your station, I feel peace in my home. The words give me hope and encourage my family to come together and pray.”
Our adversaries, whose rivalry had grown so strong over time, were forced by circumstances to listen to our broadcast. Through mutual respect and understanding, their animosity faded, and they became our trusted confidants, proving that even the deepest rivalry can transform into a lasting friendship.
Ultimately, this story truly highlights how perseverance and endurance help shape our character. Even when the journey feels long, every step forward is a small victory worth celebrating.
