In northern Japan, there was a small railway station called Kyu-Shirataki. Tucked away in the countryside, it served very few passengers. As the surrounding area became quieter and fewer people used the line, the station was eventually scheduled to close.
But before it did, one regular passenger remained: a schoolgirl.
For a time, the train continued to stop each morning and afternoon so she could travel to and from school. When she graduated, the station closed.
Whether you read the story as a remarkable act of public service or simply a reflection of Japan’s respect for responsibility and education, it leaves you with one powerful thought:
One person mattered.
That story reminds me of another journey.
Jesus once told a parable about a shepherd who left ninety-nine sheep to search for one that had wandered away. To many people, it seems illogical. Why leave the many for the one? Yet that is the heart of the gospel. Heaven measures value differently from the world.
The truth is even more astonishing. Jesus did not merely leave ninety-nine sheep. He left heaven itself. He stepped into a broken world because every life matters to Him. If there had only been one person to save, Christ would still have come.
As I prepare to serve in Japan, I often think about that. Mission is not only about reaching millions. It is about loving one person at a time. One conversation. One friendship. One family. One life transformed by the grace of God.
Japan is home to more than 120 million people, yet each one is known by name, loved beyond measure, and worth Christ’s sacrifice.
Will you help me reach them, one person at a time?
Through your prayers and monthly partnership, you become part of God’s search for those who have not yet heard the good news. Together, we can share the hope of Jesus with people who are infinitely valuable in His sight.
The train eventually stopped running to Kyu-Shirataki.
God’s pursuit never does.
