“I don’t know why I’m here. Why am I doing this?” he said repeatedly. He smelled strongly of alcohol and was visibly agitated. His eyes darted around the sanctuary as he nervously paced back and forth. Two church elders stood close by on either side of him, quietly urging him to come with them. He refused, “The church needs to hear this!” Clearly he was under spiritual oppression.
Our online search of Benin turned up many references to voodoo. It’s sad and disturbing to see the torture and pain Satan inflicts on those in his clutches. Some people question the reality of demonic oppression or suggest that it occurs only in areas where religions such as voodoo or animism predominate.
The Bible describes Satan as a “roaring lion” seeking people to devour (1 Peter 5:8). He knows no earthly borders and respects no cultural or religious boundaries. His kingdom is anyone, anywhere who consents to his rule by venturing onto his territory and choosing to disobey God. The great battle for souls is real and universal. Casualties are all around us.
Praise God that Satan is a defeated foe! We have weapons of warfare (2 Corinthians 10:3-5) that will defeat Satan every time if we use them in the name of Jesus (Luke 10:19). Daily we seek to strengthen our walk with Jesus as we prepare for the spiritual battle raging over our Pendjari family in Benin. Pray for us, friends. God is opening our eyes to the battle all around us, and victory can by won only by His grace and power.
Jesus came to set the captives free. “If the Son therefore shall make you free ye shall be free indeed” (John 8:36). The battle has already been won! Join us in storming the Pendjari region as conquerors under the bloodstained banner of Jesus Christ. Victory is ours!
