The Road That Leads Nowhere

There is a railway station in Japan where no train will ever arrive.

On the small island of Yoron, in Kagoshima Prefecture, stands Yoron Station, complete with a station sign, a gate, a wheel and about five meters (16.4 feet) of railway track. It looks like a railway station, but Yoron Island has no railway. The station is part of an imagined line connecting Kagoshima, Yoron and Okinawa.

You can stand on the platform. You can look down the track. You can even imagine where the train might take you.

But no train is coming.

There is something strangely familiar about that.

We can spend years moving. We study, work, build careers, pursue relationships, buy things, travel, achieve goals and make plans for the future. There is always another destination ahead of us. And yet, sometimes we can spend our entire lives moving without ever asking where we are actually going.

Jesus once asked, “For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” (Matthew 16:26, NKJV).

The problem is not that our destinations are necessarily bad. A career can be good. A family can be a blessing. Education, achievement and experiences can all have value. But none of them were designed to carry the weight of our ultimate hope.

We can arrive at the places we spent years trying to reach and still discover something is missing.

Perhaps that is why Jesus’ invitation is so different. He does not simply offer us another destination to pursue. He offers Himself.

“I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6, NKJV).

A station can point towards a journey. But only Christ can tell us where the journey is leading.

Japan is one of the most advanced and highly connected countries in the world. Yet behind all the movement, achievement, and activity are people asking the same questions we all ask: Why am I here? Where am I going? What will make my life meaningful?

I want to help people in Japan discover that the answer is not simply a better destination.

It is Jesus.

Will you pray that, through your partnership and my ministry in Japan, people will discover the One who is truly the Way?
