The Red Tent

“What is going on out there?” James asks as we both rush to the balcony of our apartment. In the parking lot is a large red tent. The sounds that come from it are best described by Matthew 13:50—wailing and gnashing of teeth.

It is early morning, and we can see people arriving at the red tent. They come on foot or by taxi. Most of them are dressed in black. As we continue to watch, we realize it must be a funeral. Finally, the news confirms our suspicions about this mysterious red tent. A prominent leader passed away the previous night. He will be buried today, according to the cultural tradition. The wailing from the red tent can be heard for miles, and it sends shivers down my spine. It is the repetition that really strikes me. It is the same prayer prayed over and over, up to 17 times per day—the prayer written on each grave that must be read to the deceased. It is simply a request: “Guide us on the straight path.”

Now, two days later, the wailing prayer has finally stopped. Dear God, please hear your people’s cries.

This experience gave me a new perspective on the people of this city and a new sense of purpose. God’s people are crying out to Him. They are asking Him to guide them on the straight path. Jesus said that if He is lifted up, He will draw all men to Him. That is what we need to do. As we daily lift up Christ, His people will be drawn to Him and surely be guided on the straight path. I want to be Your guide today, God. Help me to guide others on the straight path. Amen.
