The Flavor of Witnessing

Since we returned to Kandi in February, we have given much thought to how to be more tactful and charitable as we begin the second phase of our project. Before the end of 2008, God used many people in the community to vindicate us. Neighbors, languages helpers and some top religious leaders were our advocates: “Mr Badé is not an enemy of our religion, and he has not offended us in any way.” As African cultural insiders, Elmire and I have been working to strengthen our support here. When we came back from the States, we brought gifts for more than 30 people. We have assisted some families with medical bills and given out small donations for community assistance, all this in addition to our standard Zakat charity (see the September 2007 AF).

Though these gifts could be misinterpreted, we have no fear because we have no hidden agenda, and we’re not trying to buy converts. Our major goal is to put some personal flavor into our witnessing. With a growing understanding of our people’s needs, we seek to address their fears, attitudes and prejudices. As Ellen White says in Evangelism, “Let every worker in the Master’s vineyard study, plan and devise methods to reach people where they are . . .” (p. 122). “Every advance move made now must be made with increasing effort; for Satan is working with all power to increase the difficulties in our way . . .” (p. 30).

By the grace of God, we made an important move recently. In March, our project offered two soccer uniforms and a new soccer ball to one of the important soccer teams in town made up of teenagers, adults, students, teachers, medical workers, police men, El hadj and even Imams. It was not one of the small aid-and-outreach projects we had planned, but God moved a teacher at Loma Linda Academy in California to offer us these uniforms. The donation resulted in many positive and encouraging comments from all over the village. We are so grateful for the favorable impact in the community. We pray that this will help overcome some prejudices and break down some barriers to our ministry. We are planning more community projects, and we welcome your input. God bless, and thanks for your faithful prayers and support.
