In our preparation to become missionaries to the Ama people of PNG, one of the very first people we met was Pam Lello and her two daughters. You may remember Pam’s husband John died tragically in 2012 while serving the Ama.
Pam’s devotion to the work her family started has not faltered. She volunteered to assist us in fundraising, making phone calls and speaking in churches. Her desire, she said, was to help us get to Ama as quickly as possible so the work there would not languish and die. She told me, “I had been praying and crying to the Lord for a family to go be with my people. God heard my prayer and answered it in His time.” Pam shared the Bible verse that has strengthened her as she has cried, “What do I do now, Lord?” “I know the plans that I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future” (Jer. 29:11).
Pam has found that God still has a plan for her life, and she has been publicly sharing her story. She shares that she carried selfish desires with her to the mission field and had a very hard time there. After losing John, she realized that life is short. She asked herself, “What am I doing to hasten the Lord’s coming? What kind of heart do I really have? I then rededicated my whole life for His service. My focus has changed, and Christ has given me a new heart.”
Pam is our friend, and we can testify that she has the peace and happiness of heaven in her life! The powerful faith that took her through hard times is exactly what the Ama people are looking for.
