Taking a shower every day, brushing our teeth, having light any time we want or buying any food for which we get a craving — some things are so common or routine that we don’t notice how, on the other side of the world, they are challenging to do or to have. Christians even tend to believe all people throughout the world have access to the Bible. The truth is, even in the country of Georgia, there are barriers to getting a Bible.

If you were to locate an Orthodox Georgian Bible for sale, you would discover that it is written in an old Georgian language. Only priests who studied the language can read and understand it. Since the general population cannot, they need to ask church leaders the meaning of the scriptures. This reminds me of when, during the Protestant Reformation, Martin Luther translated the Bible from Latin to German so common people could read and comprehend the Word of God.

In Georgia, Protestants have a limited supply of Bibles. There are only two versions available: Orthodox large format family Bibles, which are very inconvenient to carry, or smaller format Bibles that include non-canonical books, which makes it confusing for those who have never read the Bible and don’t understand why they should read some of the books while ignoring others.

God has big plans for the Georgian people. As His workers and disciples, it is our responsibility to go and lead them from man’s interpretations and traditions back to God’s instructions.
