Oh, how cute! the young Japanese woman thought.
She was standing next to an American family on a packed train when the couple’s baby reached out and grabbed her shirt. Having a good command of English, she began talking with the American family.
“We are Christian missionaries,” they said.
The young woman was stunned! She had attended college at an American university some years earlier, and Christians invited her to join a small-group Bible study. She became friends with these Christians, regularly attending their small group, and enjoyed learning about God from the Bible. Upon graduating, she returned to Japan.
Oh, how she missed the Christian fellowship she experienced in America. She tried for years to read the Bible herself but found it difficult. She prayed to God that He would lead her to some Christians she could fellowship with, but, as Christianity is rare in Japan, she found none and started to give up. Then, by the grace of God, that weekend on the train, a missionary’s baby grabbed her, and the family invited her to fellowship with them at a wonderful missionary training in Tokyo, which we were also attending.
She really enjoyed worship time and paid close attention to the teaching. It was later that we learned how she became part of the group. While the training lasted only a few days, the family she connected with was staying in Tokyo a while longer and committed to following up with her.
God is reaching out—through an infant’s arms in this instance—to bring lost souls in unreached people groups into contact with His people who can then direct them to the Savior. Please continue to pray for further experiences like this and for God to perform more miracles in Japan, leading people to believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
