In February and March of this year, the world awoke to the towering menace of the SARS-COV-2 virus, and events rapidly began to cascade. Borders closed. Flights were cancelled en masse. Governments issued stay-at-home orders, and the world economy largely shuddered to a halt.

I remember watching all of this unfold over what seemed like just a few hours, and I trembled at the implications for AFM, a ministry that depends on unrestricted international travel, face-to-face friendship evangelism, and the monetary gifts of people moved to share their blessings. Things looked pretty grim to me on all these fronts. I remember thinking, There is nothing we can do. And then, I wonder what God will do?

In subsequent months as missionary reports have filtered back from the front lines, the answer to this question is being pieced together like a puzzle before my eyes. When our human ability to see the future and take strategic steps failed, God’s did not. In fact, I now hear Him whispering, “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland” (Isa. 43:19).

What is God doing? Read it for yourself in this month’s magazine, especially the articles by Carrie (p. 8) and Leonda George (p. 12). In these and many other mission projects, God is revealing, yet again, His power to turn calamity into opportunity. What a thrill to be part of the action that He is so masterfully organizing!
