Discovering the Climate and Vegetation of Central Africa

Central Africa is a region mainly covered with plants. It has the largest forest in Africa, the Congo Basin, which has a plant cover of more than 268 million hectares (over 662 million acres). It has more than 170 million hectares (over 420 million acres) of dense forest. The Congo Basin covers an area of 3.6 million square kilometers (almost 1.4 million miles). The region is one of the wettest in Africa, with climates varying between 18 and 30 degrees Celsius (64.4 to 86.0 degrees Fahrenheit). Today, the deforestation that threatens this basin causes an environmental imbalance, decreasing the rainfall and causing the advance of the desert in some countries in the region, such as northern Cameroon, Chad and the northeast of the Central African Republic.

What are the temperatures like in Central Africa throughout the year? From October to January, after the heavy rains, temperatures are between 70 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. From March to June, temperatures are between 100 to 130 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on the country.  During this period, rivers and wells dry up, and animals and sometimes people die from dehydration.

Nowadays, Africa is a victim of the changes in climate that affect our planet. In 2024, Central Africa recorded record temperatures ranging from 90 to 126 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on the country. In Chad, during the dry season, the country set record temperatures of 130 degrees Fahrenheit. During the heavy rain season in Chad, floods caused more than 340 deaths and left 1.5 million homeless across the country. Just this October, the capital, Ndjamena, experienced unprecedented flooding.

As a missionary, despite the difficult climatic conditions, the Lord sends us to these people to announce the good news of salvation in Jesus Christ. We highly regard your prayers and support for the animists of Central Africa.
