Direct My Steps

I couldn’t see a thing. In the pitch black, I cautiously shuffled my feet, feeling each step of the way. My hands groped outward, trying to feel for any obstacles. Then a voice came through the darkness. “It’s okay! Just follow my voice. You can put your hands down. I won’t let you run into anything. Go ahead, walk faster! Slow down now; you’ll need to step over a stick.”

Fighting my instincts, I tried to relax and trust the voice.

We were at Bair Lake Youth Camp with the other missionaries-in-training. As part of our training program, our group comes out to the camp every Friday to take a break from the hours of sitting in class and to help us with team building. Among other activities that day, we took a “blind walk.” We took turns blindfolding our spouses and, without touching them, led them on a walk.

As Philip directed my steps, God spoke to my heart. Just as I was having a hard time trusting Philip even though I know he loves me, so it often is when God calls me to do things for Him in faith. Sometimes, He simply says, “Come, follow Me!” He doesn’t tell me all the details that lie ahead. I don’t know where all the obstacles are. Human instinct tells me to fret, worry, and try to map everything out. But, praise the Lord, He stretches my faith! He puts us in dark situations where the only safe option is to trust in Him completely. Obstacles may be all around, but if we follow His voice, He will direct our steps. The darkness of the situation only makes His voice the more sweet and comforting as He beckons, “This is the way, walk in it” (Isa. 30:21).
