Georgia’s past is complex and multifaceted, especially its relationship with the Soviet Union, which spanned several decades. Located in the Caucasus region of Eurasia, Georgia has had a long and intricate association with its powerful neighbor to the north.
The Soviet era left a significant imprint on Georgian culture and identity. This has led to a complex interplay between Georgian and Russian cultural influences, shaping the identity of today’s Georgians. Like other Soviet republics, Georgia experienced political repression under Soviet rule, with dissenting voices often suppressed by the authorities. These tensions erupted into violent conflicts following the collapse of the Soviet Union, leading to protracted separatist movements and wars. The 2008 Russo-Georgian War, sparked by tensions in South Ossetia, resulted in significant loss of life and further destabilized the region.
Since Adam and Eve, Satan has tried to suppress any interest in God, many times using wars and violent conflicts between families, neighbors and believers in the same religion. We can see this with Cain and Abel, Isaac and Ishmael, Esau and Jacob, David’s family, and the disciples who were persecuted by their own people. No matter who is right or wrong, these situations tremendously impact how people think and live, causing traumas and fears for all.
Though the resulting mindset of Georgians is complex, we are committed to helping these precious people heal by showing them the love, friendship and kindness of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We expect God to move their hearts closer to Him and that they realize that Jesus still cares about them and wants to have a deep relationship. Please pray for us to have enough emotional wisdom to deal with this reality. Won’t you join us in sharing the gospel with the unreached of Georgia?
