Carry the Light

The darkness hangs thick all around them,
I can smell the despair in the air.
The cries of the lost and the dying
Reach my ear from the depths of his lair.

I can hear the poor call of the hopeless:
“Somebody help us,” they cry.
The clock ticks steadily onward
Only hours till the sunset of time.

There’s only One who can save them—
The Light who has brought me thus far.
But so few are willing to help Him,
To risk themselves for souls in despair.

There are strong, able people around me
But they turn a deaf ear to the cries.
Their last chance is fleeing so quickly,
They are caught in a thick web of lies.

Won’t anyone step forward to save them?
Will no one risk this short life?
Can there be a greater honor
Than to die saving somebody’s life?

What greater destiny could we hope for?
To what higher mark could we aim
Than to rescue souls sinking in darkness,
And fan those weak embers to flame?

So now I must make my decision,
Choose the path that will alter my life.
Will I sit here in comfort and quiet
Or run forth to carry the Light?

What choice have you made in your own heart?
Are you troubled, confused and torn?
Do you have a strong and clear vision?
Which side are you working for?

Take hold of that vision He’s given,
Move forward with steps firm and strong.
It’s time to pierce their darkness
They’ve been waiting far too long.
