For the past few weeks, we have turned our attention to many local Christians of other denominations who are interested in studying the Bible with us. For three years, we have avoided this. Committed to reaching out to our target people, the Dendi Muslims of Kandi, we had to set aside most of the Bible-study requests we received from other Christians. Though this has been frustrating and isolating, we prayed the Holy Spirit would keep these dear people while we remained focused on our project mission and developed our outreach strategy.
In June, we reached the point in our strategy when we felt we could start including Christians of other denominations in our outreach plan. Our goal is that they will serve as allies in reaching out to Dendi Muslims. Many of the Christians in the town have a lot of influence among Muslims, especially medical and educational workers. So we have begun to cultivate relationships with nurses, midwives, medical doctors, primary and secondary school teachers and other workers in those fields.
A few months ago, Mr. Rigobert, my trumpet teacher and the town band director, began showing very deep interest in Bible studies. He has now completed 24 lessons in a Bible-study series, attended all our services for four weeks and invited two of his relatives to some of our prayer and worship services. He has a dual religious heritage—a Muslim background from his Dendi mother and a Christian experience with his Catholic father. His hunger for more spiritual insight led him to a Pentecostal church where, during 10 months, he had many spiritual experiences and led many people to Christ.
Brother Rigobert has decided to join us in our faith. He comes with very good access to hundreds of valuable contacts in both the Muslim and Christian community. His band plays for both groups, and he is well known in town. Dendi is his mother tongue, and Islam is his former religion. Please pray for him as the Lord leads him in his new Christian faith with us.
