A Country Shaped by Seasons

Japan pays close attention to the seasons. Spring arrives with cherry blossoms that draw crowds into parks and streets. Summer brings festivals and fireworks. In autumn, mountains glow with red and gold leaves, while winter covers parts of the country in deep snow.

The changing seasons are not treated as background details. They shape food, art, poetry, celebrations and daily life. Even small things, like sweets in shops or decorations in cafés, change with the time of year. Japan understands how to notice the passing of seasons.

There is something deeply human about this rhythm.

Seasons remind us that life does not remain the same forever. Times of growth are followed by hardship. Joy can give way to sorrow, and difficult winters eventually give way to spring again. Scripture reflects this reality when Ecclesiastes tells us that there is “a time for every purpose under heaven.”

During my vision trip, taken to gain insight into the mission ahead, I realized that many people in Japan deeply understand the beauty and fragility of life. Cherry blossoms, admired across the country, bloom brilliantly for only a short time before falling. Their beauty is found partly, even poignantly, in how quickly they pass.

Yet while Japan celebrates the changing seasons of life, many people are still searching for something unchanging upon which to anchor their lives. The gospel offers that foundation. In Jesus, we find hope that does not fade with circumstances and peace that remains steady through every season.

As I prepare to serve in Japan, I am reminded that mission also has seasons. Some moments are filled with visible growth, while others require patience and trust. Through it all, God remains faithful.

Through your prayers and faithful monthly support, you become part of sharing that enduring hope with people across Japan. Together, we can help point others to the One who remains constant through every season of life.
