Located on the Mekong river, Nongkhai is less than 20 miles from Laos. It is known for the infamous “Naga fireballs” that appear to supernaturally shoot up from the river during the first full moon in October. The people of Nongkhai, like all of Thailand, are primarily Buddhist. Hindu influences are also seen in this area.
