The greatest want of the world is the want of men—men who will not be bought or sold; men who in their inmost souls are true and honest; men who do not fear to call sin by its right name; men whose conscience is as true to duty as the needle to the pole; men who will stand for the right though the heavens fall” (Education, p. 57).

This is one of my favorite quotes. I pray that the grace of God and the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit might transform me into such a man. So it is with a certain amount of trepidation that I rephrase the quote as follows:

“The greatest want of the world is the want of men—men who will venture all for the glory of Christ; men who are faithful to the call of God as missionaries to the unreached; men who do not fear to go to the ends of the earth proclaiming the everlasting gospel; men whose conscience is as true to the Word of God as the needle to the pole; men who will stand for the right though faced with discouragement, loneliness, family pressures, illness and persecution; men who love God more than life itself” (JB Version).

The Spirit of Prophecy also says, “Those who are the partakers of the grace of Christ will be ready to make any sacrifice, that others for whom He died may share the heavenly gift. They will do all they can to make the world better for their stay in it. This spirit is the sure outgrowth of a soul truly converted. . . . If the followers of Christ were awake to duty, there would be thousands where there is one today proclaiming the gospel in heathen lands.” (Steps to Christ, p. 78, 81)
