On a Hill Far Away

Planting banana trees on a farm in Cambodia is a rewarding yet challenging experience, especially when done on a steep hill. The unique demands of planting on such terrain offer us profound spiritual lessons about perseverance, faith and care for our brethren.

Growing banana trees on a steep hillside is no easy task. The slope presents a risk of soil erosion, requiring special attention to water management and the soil’s overall health. This extra effort reminds us that, in our spiritual journey, we often face uphill battles—circumstances that test our faith and commitment. In James 1:2-3, we are reminded, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

The steep hillside is much like these trials, requiring patience and diligent care to ensure strong tree growth. Likewise, our spiritual lives also require perseverance through challenges, knowing that they strengthen our faith and bring us closer to God.

One of the key concerns when planting on a hill is ensuring that the banana trees develop strong roots so they won’t be washed away during heavy rains. This speaks to the importance of building a strong foundation in our faith. In Matthew 7:24-25, Jesus says, “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” Like these banana trees, if we are deeply rooted in Christ, we will stand firm no matter the storms we face.

Caring for banana trees on such difficult terrain also mirrors how we are called to care for our brethren. Just as the trees need extra attention and care to produce abundant fruit, our brothers and sisters in Christ need our nurturing support and encouragement, especially in times of struggle. Galatians 6:9 reads, “Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” And like banana trees, which grow in clusters, we thrive in community, growing together in faith and bearing fruit for God’s kingdom.

By nurturing both our crops and our community, we embody Christ’s love and reflect the unity we are called to live out. Planting on a hill may be hard work, but the rewards—both physical and spiritual—are great.
