My Russian Neighbors

Why do missionaries spend years learning languages and cultures before doing what many would call real ministry?

As I begin learning my second new language in the past year, that question often comes to mind.

Imagine the following. A Russian family moves into your neighborhood. They look different, speak a language you cannot understand and hold beliefs that seem completely foreign. Some of their customs even feel offensive to values your family has cherished for generations. Then they invite you to their religious meetings—conducted entirely in Russian—and tell you that the God they worship is the only true path to salvation.

Would you attend? Would you send your children to their programs?

Probably not.

Now imagine a different approach. This same family arrives not merely to teach, but to learn. They take time to understand your culture. They learn your language, respect your customs, and seek to understand what you believe and why. Without compromising their convictions, they serve, listen and love.

They become the kind of neighbors everyone wishes they had.

As trust grows, their faith becomes visible—not merely through words, but through a life transformed by God. You notice their patience, their kindness and their peace. You see prayers answered. You experience genuine care. Their God becomes more than a doctrine; He becomes a living reality.

Which family would you be willing to listen to?

This is why language learning is ministry. Cultural understanding is ministry.

Long before a sermon is preached or a Bible study is given, hearts are opened through relationships built on respect, humility and love.

Whether God has called you across the world or across the street, the principle remains the same. Take time to understand your neighbors, colleagues and family members. Listen to their stories. Learn their world. Love them as Christ loves them.

When you do, the Holy Spirit opens doors that arguments never could, and seeds are planted that can bear fruit for eternity.
