We were late for church as I opened the car door and slid into the seat. Just then, I saw one of our neighbors walking hurriedly down the road. She must be late for work, I thought. I should probably give her a ride.
Tonya and Dikee got into the car, and we started off. Driving down the steep road from our house, we overtook the neighbor lady who is Christian and manages a Christian bookstore. I rolled down my window. “Do you need a ride to your shop?”
“Oh yes, please! I’m already so late.”
As we drove along, I thought to myself, At least for the few minutes she is in our car she can rest and experience a little bit of Sabbath.
My thoughts were interrupted when she said, “You know, the roads in Darjeeling are terrible these days. Full of potholes and broken everywhere. These politicians keep all the taxes for themselves. There is so much corruption. I bet it’s not like that in America.”
“Actually, there is corruption everywhere in the world, even in America. The Bible says the whole world will be filled with corrupt people just before Jesus comes back again. It must mean that Jesus is coming very soon.”
Looking in my rearview mirror, I could see her nodding her head, an expression of realization spreading across her face.
“Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone” (Col. 4:5, 6 NIV).
