God’s Calling

Sometime during high school, I decided I wanted to spend my life working for God. My logic was that if I worked for God I would never be out of a job. I wasn’t thinking specifically of spreading the gospel, I just wanted to do something that would matter for eternity.

After meeting Jason in Africa, I always knew he wanted to go back there. I wasn’t too interested in going, but knew I would be happy wherever he was, so for a while my call felt like it was being molded by his perspective and his desire to do evangelistic work and training in Africa.

In the fall of 2008, after Reuben was born, we started talking more seriously about our options for mission service in Africa. After praying about it, we felt God leading us to join AFM. So, in the spring of 2009, we attended orientation and received a call to join Suzy, Uli and Toussaint in Benin.

At orientation we received a compilation of articles to read called “Worldwide Perspectives,” which goes through the Biblical reasons for missions, the historical aspect and the cultural perspectives. While reading that, I caught a personal vision for reaching unreached people groups of the world. I was so thankful for the opportunity to be learning these new things with the goal of sharing Christ with the unreached.

My own specific call to the Otammari Project came on Friday, June 11, when Suzy, Jason and I met with International Field Director Laurence Burn to go through our individual strength profiles. We looked at Jason’s first, then mine, then Suzy’s. I was struck with how God had put this team of people together. Our strengths really complement each other! Uli is an administrative organizer, Toussaint is a finder, Suzy is a practical learner, Jason is a value-based visionary and I am a communicator. It was so awe-inspiring to realize that God needs every single one of us on that team.

God also has a special place where He wants you to serve. If you don’t know where it is yet, keep listening. He will tell you.
