Beginning Again

I don’t get it. Here I am staring at boxes and bags labeled and inventoried with the meager treasures and so-called necessities of my life, wondering how my life has changed so much so fast. India to Nepal, Nepal to the U.S. For the second time in six months, we are beginning again. It is easier to think of it as a beginning, rather than an end.

There are a lot of things in life that I don’t understand, but if anything has become clear in the last six months, it is that God’s ways are beyond understanding. Unlike my sweaters and books, He can’t be boxed in. The good plans He has for me are often beyond my present understanding, and I must trust in His goodness and submit to His sovereignty. We assumed we knew what God was doing when He opened a door to Nepal, but the reasons have turned out to be different from what we thought. Instead of finding a new mission, we have found peace with what took us out of India. Instead of a new calling, we have gained clarity of thought. And we have been surprised by things we never saw coming.

Our time as AFM field missionaries has come to a close, and a new chapter of our lives is starting. The abrupt cancellation of our Indian visas was a surprising and painful end to our work there. It still distresses me to think of not being able to visit our church members and friends in Darjeeling. But I know I will see them again one day. We are immensely thankful that the Wrights can continue to visit and support the fledgling church as needed. Though we may have started the project, they will finish it. For more than seven years, many of you have poured your money, prayers, and hearts into serving the people of Darjeeling from a distance. God knows your service and sacrifice. You will not be disappointed, for He sees and rewards, and you have more friends and neighbors to look forward to meeting in heaven.

Recently, the Wrights visited Darjeeling and brought back video messages from our friends there. We were immensely encouraged to hear about the growth and maturing taking place among the fledgling church members and the church renovations that have started. It has been a distressing and challenging time for them, and we were heartened to see the work God has done on their behalf in strengthening their spirits.

Now we are getting ready to begin again with move number three! This time we are moving to Michigan where Jonathan will join the AFM training team. He will be working to promote cross-cultural ministry among communities here in North America. These days, you don’t have to travel to find unreached people—they are immigrating to the United States and settling in communities near you! This is a brand new position at AFM, and our ministry still depends on your generosity. As you supported us in our mission to the Gorkha people of Darjeeling, we now ask your continued support in our new ministry with AFM for the unreached on American soil.
