A Friend Like Flavia

“My best friend is Jesus,” we often repeat when teaching children during vacation Bible school.

Seeking friendship is what every missionary sets out to do as they become established in a community. Friends are so much easier to introduce to Jesus. Friendships, however, are uniquely built with every person the Lord brings into our lives.

I met my friend Flavia one Sabbath morning at our International Church in Khon Kaen. She had come from Africa to teach English. I quickly learned that she was a Christian but not a member of our church. One of our short-term missionaries had invited her, and when she experienced the fellowship and found support and love, she continued to come.

From the beginning, we have been special friends. As she has become an active part of our church, she has also gotten very excited about joining us as we share Jesus in our community, especially when we hand out copies of our large shipment of Ellen White’s The Story of Jesus translated into Thai.

She has been very active in distributing dozens upon dozens of this life-changing book to her neighbors, fellow teachers, students and their families, and others she has met.

Even though she has not had an opportunity to read the book herself, it tells about Jesus, and that is good enough for her. She longs for her Thai associates to know about her best friend — Jesus.
