Overcomers

We were so blessed and thrilled when our nine-year-old son Luke said he wanted to be baptized! One communion Sabbath, Jesus really spoke to his heart. On New Year’s Day, Luke said he wanted to give his heart to Jesus and be ready for Him to come. What an amazing start to the new year!

The first Bible study Luke had with our pastor was such a blessing. Luke is still talking about it. The Pastor explained to him that there is no way we can be good enough on our own. No matter how hard we try to do right, we will always fall short. He said it’s like trying to jump up to the top of the roof all by yourself. It’s impossible. Jesus is like the ladder we need to reach the goal of perfection. Then the pastor had another idea of how to reach our young son’s mind. In the Olympics there is a pole-vaulting event. The world record is held by a Frenchman who jumped more than 21 feet using a pole! Jesus is like that pole that boosts us all the way up to where we need to be. Luke thought that analogy was really amazing, and so did I.

I have been thinking a lot about what it means to overcome. Jesus doesn’t just want us to sin and repent; He wants to help us stop sinning. I’ve been earnestly praying that God will do this in my life. I want to be an overcomer!

Friends, let’s give ourselves and our wills wholly to God. He will keep our hearts and continually guide us on the right path. He wants us to be beautiful shining lights for Him. He wants us to be overcomers. He will help us!
