From Suicide to Salvation

“Just one more house,” I told myself. I had been knocking on doors all day, sharing my testimony with people and developing contacts for Bible studies. I decided to visit a house with several cars parked outside, hoping there would be a number of people inside.

I knocked, and Lester, a large man in his forties with a somber demeanor, opened the door. I shared my testimony briefly and sought to encourage him and pray for him. After I finished speaking, Lester stared intently at me in silence. He then proceeded to tell me about his messed-up life. He shared how his inability to work because of a back injury and his enormous debt had driven him to the point of despair. The previous night, he had considered suicide. But when His wife suggested that he ask God for help, he decided to pray. “. . . and here you are today,” he finished, “telling me about God!” Lester felt sure God had sent me to encourage him, and he wanted to study the Bible with me. Early in our studies, he accepted Jesus as his Lord.

I recently ran into Lester, and he shared how God was blessing him and his wife, and how he was no longer in debt!

The world is full of hungry souls like Lester, starving for an encouraging word from you and me, needing someone to love them and point them to Jesus. I think of the unreached people in our world who have the same heart yearnings, yet no one is near them to point them to Jesus. Let us pray together for our world’s unreached and ask God what our part should be in bringing them to a knowledge of their loving Savior!
